The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has a program to assist individuals who normally would not be able to afford home weatherization upgrades on their own. The Weatherization Assistance Program has helped more than 6.2 million families since its inception over 30 years ago. The program provides energy efficiency upgrades to homes, which reduces energy consumption. According to the DOE, the average heating bill is reduced by 32 percent with yearly savings close to $350. These savings allow families to spend money on more pressing needs such as food, clothing, or other expenses.
In addition, the new federal stimulus package significantly increased the amount of funding to the weatherization program, and raised the minimum income qualification levels. In order to qualify, a family must have an annual income that is no more than 200% over the poverty level. For a family of four that is $44,100 per year.
For more information on the program (including qualification requirements and contacts in your state) consult the website below.
