Aren't walls in homes always insulated?

Last Updated: December 01, 2011

Walls in homes are not always insulated. Insulation used to be more expensive, and energy to heat and cool homes was less costly. Many homes constructed before the 1950s were built without insulation in walls, foundations, and attics. Sometimes, even newer homes are built without adequate insulation, or the insulation may not be installed properly. Contractors may not be knowledgeable on proper installation techniques, energy codes, and insulation materials; some might simply miss certain parts of the home when insulating. Insulation installed in older homes may have also settled in wall cavities, been infested with rodents, or even deteriorated (leaving the house without adequate insulation). Many communities have home energy auditors who can assist the homeowner to determine if the home is insulated. Your local utility may also be able to provide assistance.
