For homes constructed before 1978, lead-based paint that is not chipped and peeling may be painted over or left undisturbed. In the case of doors, windows, and other painted surfaces that rub against each other, the lead-based paint should be removed prior to painting. If you are hiring a contractor to remodel, paint, or renovate your home, make sure they are certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a "Certified Renovator." Learn how to safely work with lead-based paint from the EPA's Renovate Right document.
