The ability of interior surfaces to reflect light will determine how much additional lighting is needed. Generally, the lighter the interior surface, the stronger the light reflectance will be off the surface. A measurement used in the design field to determine surface reflectance is called light reflectance value (LRV). Paint companies will often include the LRV in the paint sample information. The higher the LRV rating, the higher the surface reflectance quality. For example, a paint sample that has an LRV rating of 85 will reflect light more light than a paint rated with a 70 LRV. Also consider glare when considering reflectance quality. Glare can be a safety concern especially in flooring, countertops, and other interior surfaces.
