Can compact fluorescent lamps/lightbulbs (CFLs) be used outdoors?

Yes, however you should use a product that is specifically labeled for outdoor use and for the type of fixture in which it is housed.  For example, Energy Star notes that fixtures with timers motion sensors and photocells are generally not intended to work with CFL's.  Additionally, CFL's operate best in warmer temperatures and require a fixture that provides protection from the elements.
