What is meant by the terms periodization and tapering with reference to equine training programs?

Periodization as a training program recognizes that you cannot achieve all training goals with one training routine where these goals cycle various aspects of training throughout monthly or yearly schedules. This might be the difference between long, slow training for endurance goals versus short, fast training to develop quick speed in horses, similar to interval training.

Tapering involves progressively decreasing the frequency with which rewards are given, as a behavior becomes more established.
