Energy use in a home is related to the home's age, the climate it's in, and the occupants of the home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Savers, heating and cooling combined generally add up to about 43% of energy use in a home. This is followed by water heating (12%), lighting (11%), computer and electronics (9%), appliances (9%), refrigeration (8%), and other (8%). These numbers represent averages. Your situation may be slightly different, depending on the age of your home, the efficiency of your equipment and appliances, and the behaviors of those living in your home. To determine the specific energy usage of your home, consider having an energy audit conducted. Sources: 2007 Buildings Energy Data Book, Table 4.2.1, 2005 Energy Cost Data.
