I am a co-signer on my son's house. I'm a widow and getting older. If I become seriously ill or die, will the state go after his house, although he's the one who pays for it and I just co-signed?

If the mortgage on the house is in your son's name as the primary borrower and the title to the house is in his name alone, his house cannot be seized to pay your medical or funeral bills. However, your assets are a different story, and they could be tapped to satisfy your outstanding debts while you are alive or after death as part of the probate process. Consider getting legal advice or consulting your local Department of Social Services or Senior Services for more specific information about Medicaid, health insurance counseling, and other available services.
