Typical dry layer hen manure will supply enough nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash for most garden vegetables when spread at 100 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Sweet corn would require a little extra nitrogen. When using manure on soils to grow root vegetables and leafy vegetables which are eaten fresh, the manure should be incorporated into the soil the year before planting to prevent contamination and food-borne illness. Always wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating.
