What is a whole house fan, and how would it keep my house cooler? Does it run all of the time? Is it noisy? Is it less expensive to run than a few regular box fans?

In most climates, using a whole house fan can substitute for an air conditioner. A whole house fan is installed to pull air from the interior into the attic or outdoors. It is used with open windows (and no air conditioning) to maintain continuous air flow through the entire house. That flow-through reduces heat buildup and provides a cooler feel. It is a very energy efficient alternative to air conditioning, but does not remove humidity or maintain a set temperature. The U.S. Department of Energy has more information about Whole House Fans
