Do ceiling fans keep a house cooler? Are they expensive to run?

Last Updated: December 21, 2009

Ceiling fans make people feel cooler (from effect of evaporation on skin), but don't change the temperature of the space. They can help you save energy by making it comfortable to raise the thermostat setting on your air conditioner. Fans use a small amount of energy, but far less than air conditioning. Look for and buy ENERGY STARĀ® labeled fans that use less energy than others.
