Several air register grilles in my home are crushed and are hardly open. Is this a problem?

Yes.  Air registers that are damaged, crushed, or will not open impede circulation of the heated or cooled air in the home. In the winter time, some areas may be colder than others due to the restriction of conditioned air to that room or area. In the summer, if you have a central cooling system, some areas will be hotter than others. If the duct work is not well attached and sealed,, then your heated or cooled air is being wasted and costing you money. Damaged registers may also lead to moisture and mold problems from condensation.  

Restricted air grilles also interfere with the efficient operation of the heating and cooling system.  They create pressure in the air duct system and can put stress on the motor. Either repair or replace the air registers for more efficient operation. In addition, be sure the registers or vents are not blocked by furniture, furnishings, window treatments or other items.
