How can the design of my roof affect the survivability of my home?

If your roof has a “complex” design (for example, a roof that meets the vertical walls of a multilevel home or a roof with dormers), then siding, vents, and windows at those roof-to-wall intersections may be ignited by embers. Combustible debris can accumulate in these roof-to-wall intersections, and during a wildfire, embers can also accumulate there and ignite the debris. Once ignited, the flames will contact nearby siding, vents, or windows.
