How vulnerable is a redwood deck to embers and other wildfire threats?

View as web page

All wood decks are combustible and therefore vulnerable to embers and other wildfire threats. Exterior-rated, fire-retardant-treated decking is less vulnerable to wildfire threats than non-treated wood. Many of the wood-fiber plastic composite (WPC) decking materials are similarly combustible and vulnerable to all wildfire exposures. Redwood decking, as well as many of the composite and plastic decking products, comply with the performance requirements provided in the California Building Code for decks located in wildfire-prone areas. The vulnerability of a deck to wildfire is dependent on the decking, plus any combustible materials that may be stored on or under the deck.
