It depends on where your property is located; what codes, regulations, etc. are on the books; and whether they are actively enforced. Many locations may have ordinances requiring defensible space, but they may not be proactively enforced because of limited resources. In these instances, the ordinances are enforced in response to a specific complaint. Contact your local fire marshal or state division of forestry for information about the legal requirements for defensible space in your community.
