Cracking the kernel opens it up for digestion by the bacteria in the rumen, making the nutrients contained in it more available to the animal. This increases the efficiency of utilization of the grain. Usually, when price of corn is high, cracking is preferred over feeding it whole. If the price of fuel is high, cracking may not be as beneficial because of the cost of the processing.
