Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I have a Garmin e-trex Vista handheld GPS. It comes preloaded with a base map, but that map does not have much detail. I would like to know if I can get shapefiles from public websites, load them into the DNR Garmin program and then upload them to my handheld so that my base map will show more detail. I am mainly interested in having my unit show more roads, lakes and streams. It would be nice to be able to take advantage of the free data that is available without having to purchase additional maps.

You can upload shapefile data; however, any shapefile uploads will produce either waypoints or tracks depending on whether your shapefiles are points or lines. We are unaware of any programs - commercial or shareware - that let you use shapefiles to create a customized basemap to display in a Garmin receiver.
