Am I required to plant trees if I sell and log burned trees?

Many states have a forest practices law that will require either planted or naturally regenerated (seedlings from seed that naturally falls on the area) trees at specific numbers per acre after a timber sale. A requirement may be in place in your state for reforestation after a forest is removed by fire alone. Contact your local department of natural resources or department of lands office for the requirements in your area.

Even if you do not have to replant by law, the site will often revegetate with understory plants that may include invasive and noxious species — plants that are adapted to succeed in disturbed areas. Rapid reforestation can be a tool to reduce unwanted vegetation and establish a healthy new forest.
