When wildfire removes trees and other soil-stabilizing vegetation, the risk of landslides increases. Revegetation is the long-term solution, but short-term actions include erosion mats and sometimes engineering solutions, such as drainage structures, retaining walls, etc. The government may be responsible for federal and state lands, but they also work to help communities and a variety of landowners understand landslide risks and alternative actions to reduce the risk. Ultimately, some slides do occur and it is important to assess the level of risk and the predicted degree of damage if a slide occurs, in order to prioritize management activities.
