When these matters are in question, we want to remind horse owners that regulations are different from state to state. We suggest that you locate the Web address for the Department of Agriculture of the states in question to obtain accurate information. Most will have an animal industries division that will be able to provide you the specific requirements and consequences of traveling, in addition to Coggins tests. Most states require a Coggins test within the last year. Additionally, out-of-state travel will normally require a health certificate usually within 30 days.
According to Dr. Brett Scott from Texas A&M University, only a negative Coggins is required for transport of a horse into Texas.
However, we recommend that a health certificate (within 30 days of travel) also be obtained for each horse traveling across state lines.
