Avoid plants in which routine removal of dead leaves and branches is difficult. Ornamental juniper shrubs, for example, retain clumps of dead leaves inside the crown of branches and underneath. The dense foliage of junipers hides the dead plant material and it often goes unnoticed. Ivy and honeysuckle are also examples of plants in which dead leaves are usually difficult to remove. As general rule, avoid using evergreen shrubs and trees near the house. They often contain volatile chemicals which make them burn intensely.
