What can I plant to screen for privacy?

In general terms, deciduous shrubs and trees are usually preferred over evergreens for privacy screens in high fire hazard areas. Open growth forms and large leaves are also desirable. Contact your Cooperative Extension office for examples of plants that meet these criteria and which are adapted to your area. Regardless of the plant species selected, keep them free of dead plant material and irrigate them to keep moisture content high during fire season. Ideally, large plantings of trees and shrubs should be placed at least 30 feet from the house.
