When speaking of an insect life cycle, what is a maggot?

A maggot is the immature or larval life stage of a true fly (Order: Diptera).   A full grown maggot follows three instar stages, is 7 to 12 mm long and has a greasy, cream-colored appearance. .  If you would like learn more about the fly life cycle, view the University of Florida Extension publication House Fly-Musca domestica.
