According to the Hospice Foundation of America and Sherwin Nuland, M.D., a noted expert on the dying experience, these are not unusual activities for people who are between a few hours to a couple of days away from death. They may want to get out of bed or ask for food even though they haven't eaten in days. It is often a short-lived experience, and then the earlier signs of approaching death re-materialize, indicating that death is quite near.
