The bigger the facility, the more wood it will require and the farther that wood must be transported. The size of the plant is determined by the economically and environmentally sustainable supply of wood within a reasonable hauling distance, which can be determined by the forest type. At this time, the optimal electrical output capacity for a wood-fired electrical generation plant is from 30 to 70 MW because of limitations to a sustainable wood supply.
