How can we be sure that societal values (e.g. deforestation, wildlife habitat, endangered species, etc) are addressed when supplying wood to energy facilities?

As a citizen, you can press the energy facility to put in place regulations for suppliers to document that the wood comes from certified, sustainably managed forests. As a private forest landowner, you can make sure the logger adheres to your management objectives and follows Best Management Practices (BMPs) in harvesting the biomass. Keep in mind that harvesting biomass from the forest is NOT deforestation as deforestation refers to the permanent conversion of the forest to some other land use.
