Storm debris can be considered an opportunity fuel if the facility has the infrastructure to handle the surge of wood. It cannot be considered a reliable or constant supply and it may present some challenges. Storm debris often has a high percentage of leaves and needles yielding a high moisture content fuel with a high concentration of inorganic materials. Consequently, the energy content of storm debris will be lower and the ash contents higher than most forest biomass fuel. The higher content of inorganic materials may also lead to higher rates of slagging and corrosion in boilers.
