The public readily identifies trees and forests with wildlife habitat, recreation, water and air quality but it does not readily make the connection with the production of energy or even wood products. Community-based education about the realities of wood-based energy along with participation and input into the process of developing bioenergy facilities is an important component in clarifying public perceptions. Unfortunately many people associate campfire smoke in their eyes or smoke from some of the outdoor residential wood burners with burning wood. Better units designed for complete combustion can burn wood cleanly which also results in efficiency.
