Why can’t we solve our energy problems through conservation and solar and wind systems?

Whether one talks about electrical energy or liquid transportation fuels, conservation is indeed the "lowest hanging fruit". But, as our population grows, the demand for energy also grows and we will need to find new solutions to meet the demand. Replacing fossil fuels will not be easy and it will likely be necessary to include all renewable energy resources. Solar and wind systems are often thought of as ideal solutions because they depend on a “free” resource but in fact they have many disadvantages including cost and daily fluctuations in the amount of the solar energy or wind available. Communities will need to consider a variety of energy options and decide how they can best plan for a sustainable future. Using wood resources to generate energy and enhance local economic development may have a competitive advantage in many communities.
