In theory, dedicated wood energy plantations can be established anywhere where trees can survive. However, establishment practices are very intensive and agriculture-like, so they will most likely be established on marginal agriculture lands rather than in recently harvested forests. The current trend in public policy is to discourage conversion of existing forests to dedicated energy crops. Energy plantations might also be established on former mining properties (reclaimed surface mined areas). Based on a contribution by NCSU Extension Forestry and used with permission by authors.
