There is unprecedented interest in all forms of renewable energy including woody biomass. Reasons include increasing prices for fossil fuels, U.S. dependence on foreign-produced fossil fuels, air pollution, and the finite supply of fossil fuels. In addition, biomass-based energy is CO2-neutral, so it does not contribute to potential global warming. Further other reasons include growing interest in decentralized, community-based energy systems; concern that a long-term decline in market demand for conventional forest products may mean that it will require new markets (such as for bio-energy products) for sustainable forestry to continue in the U.S.
