Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

We recently rescued a horse from a farm and are trying to find out more about him. We were told that he was a Standardbred horse, and we think he is about 17 years old. When checking his teeth, we noticed that he has a tattoo on his inner upper lip. Would it be normal for a Standardbred horse to be tattooed in this way? Is there any way we can find more information about the animal from this tattoo?

Standardbred horses destined to race are routinely lip tattooed. You should be able to find out more information about your horse by contacting the United States Trotting Association. You can consult the USTA Web site and try this horse identification site to see if your horse's tattoo is registered.
