How long after ovulating do a mare's ova stay healthy enough to inseminate?

Generally, the ovum is viable for about 12 hours after ovulation. However, sperm are not immediately able to fertilize the ovum. Once inside the mare, they complete a process known as capacitation. Thus, we generally prefer to have the semen in the mare just prior to ovulation. Once capacitated, semen can live in the reproductive tract for about 48 hours.
