I take care of an old farm property with two pastures. One pasture is about one acre with no animals, and the other is about two acres with one horse, two goats, and two miniature horses. There is a major dandelion problem in both pastures, and when the seed blows, it re-seeds the lawn areas around the house with dandelions. Can you recommend a herbicide for the horse pasture areas? I suggested to the owner to have it sprayed and move the animals to the other pasture for a couple of weeks after spraying. Any suggestions?

2,4-D is the typical broadleaf weed killer used to handle such problems. It has generally low toxicity to livestock, but there is a two-week withdrawal time listed for livestock on pastures sprayed with 2,4-D before meat or milk may be marketed. Even though meat or milk will not be marketed from horses, it might still be a good idea to leave the animals off the treated pasture for up to two weeks after treatment. Your idea of spraying a pasture and keeping the animals in the other one for a week or two sounds like a good one.
