I have a very small USDA approved slaughter plant. In my federal grant of inspection, custom-exempt slaughter is also approved. Do I also need state approval, or can I perform custom exempt slaughter under the federal grant?

You do not need state approval to perform custom exempt slaughter under your federal grant of inspection. If you were purely a custom-exempt operation, the state would provide annual inspections. However, since USDA is already inspecting your plant regularly, there is no reason for the state to inspect you also. If you are at all concerned, I suggest you simply confirm this with your USDA inspector next time he or she is at your plant.
