Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

I have a horse that is somewhat overweight. I have been feeding her hay, a small amount of 10% sweet feed and free pasture grazing. My hay provider will not have more hay for about a month. I do not want to change her diet suddenly. Can I use hay cubes/pellets, or something by the bag, to substitute for the hay nutrients and roughage?

Horses consume approximately 2.5% of their body weight each day. For example, a 1,000-pound horse would consume about 25 lb of feed daily, plus water. At least 50% of your horse's diet should be forage, so it is important to keep her on pasture and continue supplementing forage while you are dealing with a hay shortage. Alfalfa hay cubes and pellets could be used to supplement to your horse's diet. These are usually available at feed stores.
