Radiant heat is the major cause of death during a wildfire. The extreme heat can lead to heat stroke and collapse, and lung injuries. In addition, a significant number of deaths occur as a result of car crashes due to poor visibility and exacerbation of pre-existing physical conditions, such as heart attacks. People who attempt late evacuation in a car, or flee on foot or on a bike are most at risk.
