How close should hives be placed to the crop they are to pollinate?

The foraging range of a bee colony is measured in square miles. However, it makes sense to place hives as near as possible to the crop. What matters more than distance to the crop is the attraction of the crop relative to other flowering plants nearby. Honey bees are notoriously capable of finding and focusing on the richest nectar source available, whether it’s the target crop, weeds, or a non-target crop.
