Most caregivers are concerned enough about the health and well-being of their loved ones that the last person on their “to do” list is themselves. Walking is one of the most effective and easiest ways to get some physical activity. It’s convenient, costs only as much as a good pair of shoes, and can be done almost anywhere, including your home.
In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services http://www.health.gov/paguidelines/ published the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommending that to reduce the risk for chronic disease and gain substantial health benefits, adults (aged 18-64), should participate in 2 hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, such as brisk walking.
For guidelines that provide information on keeping yourself safe and healthy while walking, please see the eXtension article http://www.extension.org/pages/Safe_Walking.
