American foulbrood is spread between colonies by exchanging brood combs and equipment i.e. mixing of honey supers after extraction. Gloves and hive tools can be contaminated with spore-laden honey and used by the beekeeper when working colonies. The disease is also spread by bees drifting between colonies or by bees robbing weak or diseased colonies.
