Below are some ideas for inexpensive children's activities that were suggested on an eXtension online chat about family time and vacationing on a shoestring budget: * Put on a theatrical performance in the backyard. * Write and illustrate a story. * Have sack, peanut, or egg races. * Search garage sales on a $5 budget. * Visit nature centers and state and local parks. * Visit your town or county's historical sites. * Look for inexpensive summer movie matinees, and eat or drink before you go to avoid buying expensive popcorn, candy, and drinks. * Plan a "staycation" that includes activities at home or within a short radius (for example, 5 to 10 miles) from home and/or one-day "daycation" activities. * Visit popular vacation sites off season when prices are reduced (and waiting times are shorter!).
