Why do auto insurance companies check credit scores and use them to set insurance rates?

Not all auto insurance companies follow this practice. Those that do use credit scores in setting auto insurance premiums cite studies indicating that consumers with poor credit histories are more likely to file insurance claims. In other words, these companies believe that a person's credit history is a good predictor of future claims.
