The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identified novel H1N1 as a new influenza virus causing illness in humans and because there is no immunity for this disease many people have become sick and died worldwide. The virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. The virus has spread worldwide via person-to-person transmission, likely in the same manner as seasonal flu. June 2009 the World Health organization declared novel H1N1 a pandemic.
