Last Updated: September 10, 2009

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend the use of the antivirals oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with novel H1N1 flu virus. Additional revisions to these recommendations should be expected as the epidemiology and clinical presentation of 2009 H1N1 influenza is better understood. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in the body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs may make the illness milder and recovery faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. These medications must be given by medical professionals.
