Who pays more for housing: renters or homeowners?

It depends on a number of factors. One of the most important is the location of the house or apartment. For example, is the property located near a major metropolitan area or in a location that has experienced a high level of unemployment? Apart from local factors, renters often pay more on a monthly cash flow basis. After all, they are not responsible for paying property taxes — the landlord is. When federal income tax deductions for mortgage interest and property taxes are considered, however, homeowners often come out ahead and end up paying less.
