The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that information on the effectiveness of the use of face masks and respirators to decrease the risk of influenza infection in community settings is extremely limited. CDC is e reviewing new research out of Australia which indicates mask are not effective. Some people feel it necessary to wear masks when there is an outbreak of a virus. However, masks are most effective for those who are sick, so they do not spread germs through coughing and sneezing. Wearing a mask when you are well does little to keep you from catching a virus.

In the absence of clear scientific data, interim recommendations for preventing the transmission of novel H1N1 were developed for community and home settings:
* Non-ill people
* People ill with confirmed, probable or suspected novel H1N1
