The Safe Drinking Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), protects the quality of community drinking water in the U.S. This legislation was passed in 1974 and amended and strengthened in 1986 and 1996.

No federal regulations safeguard private drinking water sources, such as private wells. Some states, however, may have laws that govern the construction and/or testing of a private well. Check with your state drinking water agency or local health department.
