What is hexavalent chromium and can it affect drinking water?

Hexavalent chromium is a highly oxidized state of chromium that is more toxic to humans than the form normally found in soils and plants, and it can affect drinking water. Hexavalent chromium, Cr+6, is associated with industrial waste. If improperly disposed, hexavalent chromium could end up in drinking water.
