Asbestos-cement pipes are made from cement with asbestos fibers added to make the pipes strong. Most drinking water passes through these pipes without becoming contaminated, and so they are safe. Although asbestos has been banned for many uses by the U.S. government, asbestos-cement pipes are exempt because inhaling fibers is more dangerous than swallowing. However, they are not popular in new construction; cement-lined iron pipe is more common now. To learn about water conditions in your area and to find out if asbestos-cement pipes are used, call your water company.
