In the United States, more than half of the drinking water suppliers are privately owned, just like any other company. The amount these companies charge their customers for drinking water is controlled by state public utilities commissions. Many of these companies are listed on the New York Stock Exchange or other exchanges, and the public may purchase shares. There is a growing global trend toward more private ownership of drinking water utilities. This pattern is also evident in the United States.
